The Danger of Self Promotion

The Danger of Self Promotion

Jeremiah 45:5.
”Should you seek great things for yourself?Do not seek them.”

Self promotion is a very common flaw among ministers, politicians, leaders and humanity in general. In our key scripture above, God warns a very smart but ambitious scribe, not to seek great things for himself in this world. It’s not surprising therefore, that the Bible is replete with examples of people who tried to promote themselves to their own hurt.

  1. The men at the tower of Babel.
In Genesis chapter 11, we are told of men who wanted to build a tower up to the heavens, in order to make a name for themselves. This ambitious mission was disrupted by God himself. God brought their dream to an abrupt end.
  2. Absalom built a monument for himself.
We read from 2 Samuel 18:18 that, in his bid to gain prominence, Absalom, the son of David set up a monument for himself and nursed the the idea of annexing the throne of his father. He positioned himself as the ‘people’s man’ but predictably, he also met his untimely death in a war against his own father.
  3. Lucifer, the archangel.
Indeed, the desire to seek great things for oneself emanates from the devil himself. ”He said in his heart, I will raise my throne above the stars of God.” (Isa 14:13). By this thought alone, He was ousted from heaven in a great war. (Rev 12:10).

Dear friend, it is clear from the above stories, that self promotion is probably one of the most destructive pursuits of humanity.

The Bible says “for promotion cometh neither from the east nor the west, nor the south”. (Psm 75:6). ”Indeed, a man can receive nothing except it be given him from above.” (John 3: 27).

I see God lifting you up in a way that will surprise even your enemies, if only you will give room for Him to do so.
